Do I need to pay anything?
Depending on the site conditions and specific Forest Service requirements, the forestry grants will usually cover all the cost of works conducted. The first instalment is aid after planting subject to adherence to conditions such as ground preparation, drainage, fencing and planting.
The second instalment (the remaining 25%) is paid four years after planting, once the trees have become fully established and are free growing

What can I plant on my land?
What can be planted depends on numerous factors. A free no obligation assessment will be conducted by TFC, and all options discussed with you.
How much will I receive in premiums?
This will depend entirely on the species planted, it ranges from €350 to €1142 per hectare.
Who owns the land once planted?
You remain the owner of the land.
Who decides what trees are planted?
After the thorough land assessment is conducted by TFC and the options discussed with the landowner, TFC will apply to the Department of Agriculture for approval to plant the species of trees deemed most suitable for the land. TFC will continue to communicate with the Department on any additional support required to secure the approvals.
Who manages the paperwork?
As part of our service TFC consults directly with the Department of Agriculture regarding the grant applications and relevant paperwork.
What approvals are required?
Planting approval must be secured from the Forest Service which TFC oversees for you.
Do I need a felling licence to cut my trees in the forest?
Yes
How long does it take a conifer crop to mature?
Our main crop is Sitka spruce which can be mature in 30 years, but the time involved varies with the type of land planted and species of tree planted. Irish conifer crops mature quicker than anywhere else in Europe.
Who regulates the forestry schemes and payments?
The Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture based in Wexford regulate all aspects of Irish Forestry.
Are timber sales tax free?

What does a site visit cost?
TFC offers this service free of charge.
Do all landowners qualify for the forestry premium?
Most landowners can qualify for the forestry premium.

Will I get an income from the first year?
Yes, the forest premium is usually paid within 3 months of the planting being complete and are income tax-free but are liable for USC and PRSI.
What is thinning and is it profitable?
The Forestry Company is committed and focused on ensuring that the final crop reaches its full potential, through vital thinning at pertinent moments during its lifetime. Giving space to the final crop trees allows them to increase in size, delivering a high percentage of valuable saw log at felling stage. TFC will organise and manage the thinning of your forest for a % of the profit we make for you.
