Tom Hayes TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, today announced the launch of a new Seed Stand and Seed Orchard Scheme. The Minister of State made the announcement during his keynote address to the National Conference on ‘What shall we do with our hardwoods’, organised by the Wood Marketing Federation and the Society of Irish Foresters, in Johnstown Castle Hotel, Enfield, Co. Tom Hayes, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, announced that the annual tax-free forestry premium payments for 2015 will be issued by his Department today with forest owners receiving them by the end of this week. Minister Hayes commented that “the level of payments each year illustrate the interest and take-up of the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme over the years, with farmers representing the bulk of the forest owners. I am confident that the new Forestry Programme 2014-2020, which consists of 11 measures with increased grant and premium rates for new afforestation projects, will prove equally attractive to landowners”. Noel Lane of The Forestry Company celebrated National Tree Week in his local community. He is pictured with members of Farranfore Development Association and Currow Rural Development Association. Noel also donated new trees to Loughfouder National School, Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry and to Brosna National School, Co. Kerry.
The new forestry programme has been warmly welcomed by John Roche of The Forestry Company who noted that there are a number of changes in the new scheme which will make it significantly more attractive than the one it replaces. The key improvements are in the improved forest road grant scheme as well as the opening up of the attractive annual premiums to farmers and non-farmers alike. Indeed the removal of the barrier to the farmer rate of premium for non-farmers has been welcomed by most in the industry. Mr. Roche stated “This is a major improvement on the old scheme. Tom Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, confirmed today that the terms and conditions of the current Forest Road Scheme will continue to apply to applications financially approved up to and including 30 June 2014, with 31 March 2014 being the deadline for submission of applications under the current Scheme.
