Tom Hayes, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, announced that the annual tax-free forestry premium payments for 2015 will be issued by his Department today with forest owners receiving them by the end of this week. Minister Hayes commented that “the level of payments each year illustrate the interest and take-up of the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme over the years, with farmers representing the bulk of the forest owners. I am confident that the new Forestry Programme 2014-2020, which consists of 11 measures with increased grant and premium rates for new afforestation projects, will prove equally attractive to landowners”. The new forestry programme has been warmly welcomed by John Roche of The Forestry Company who noted that there are a number of changes in the new scheme which will make it significantly more attractive than the one it replaces. The key improvements are in the improved forest road grant scheme as well as the opening up of the attractive annual premiums to farmers and non-farmers alike. Indeed the removal of the barrier to the farmer rate of premium for non-farmers has been welcomed by most in the industry. Mr. Roche stated “This is a major improvement on the old scheme. Tom Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, confirmed today that the terms and conditions of the current Forest Road Scheme will continue to apply to applications financially approved up to and including 30 June 2014, with 31 March 2014 being the deadline for submission of applications under the current Scheme. Following the recent storm events and in particular, the windblow event of 12th February 2014, Minister Tom Hayes established a Windblow Taskforce. This Taskforce is chaired by Minister Hayes and includes IFFPA, Coillte, IFA, ITGA and the Forest Service, DAFM. The aim of the group is to assess the damage nationally and to quickly identify the various issues that have arisen and that will arise as a result of the severe windblow, and to agree on a course of actions to deal with these issues. Registered forest service providers have received a guidance document produced by the Taskforce that may assist owners and foresters in dealing with the windblown forests damaged during recent storms. The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Tom Hayes TD, this week announced that the current arrangement whereby payment of the forest premium and the Single Farm Payment on the same land will continue under the new Forestry Programme 2014-2020.
